Who are you? What do you do?
I am Andy Wong. I am the Associate Dean of the School of Management and Economics at CUHK(SZ). I am also the Assistant Dean of the CUHK Business School and director of the Asian Business Studies Program in Hong Kong.
What hardwares do you use?
I am a big fan of Apple products. At home, I use Mac Mini, iPhone and iPad Air. At work, I have to use Windows and recently I have bought a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. For some reasons (mainly peer influence) I have been obsessed with mechanical keyboards. I have a Filco keyboard with Cherry MX black switch.
My work involves mainly the Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc). I prefer to use Apple’s Keynote to prepare lectures.
What is your ideal working environment?
I love to work out of home or office. If I could, I prefer to bring a laptop or tablet to a coffee shop and write. My dream office is a spacious room with a huge, wooden table at the center which can sit 6 to 8 people. I can imagine myself working with a team of people, putting our laptops and a lot of snacks on the table. When I have a new idea, I can throw the idea around immediately to gain feedback. And there must be music, preferably played through big speakers but not the small ones for phones and computers. I love vacuum tube amps and have one at home. If I could I would bring it to my ideal, big office and have music all the time.
Where does your inspirations come from?
Music. I am a big believer of emotions. It’s easier to get ideas when I am in either good or bad mood. Listening to a song can easily manipulate my own feelings and make me “fragile” emotionally. That “fragility” or “vulnerability” is the best state of mind to get new inspirations. Recently, I am obsessed with the theme song of the movie “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Recommend a useful tool for daily life.
A pair of running shoes. I actually put a pair in my office. If I want to I can go straight to run after work. Running is a great tool to save money: it’s a good hobby that costs very little, and it makes you healthy so that you don’t have to spend on medical treatments or weight-loss programs!
